"Do not be fooled. Bad companions ruin good character." (I Corinthians 15:33)
Good friends are indeed a treasure. This is why time and again, our parents tell us to choose our friends wisely. They wish us to have people who are kind and respectful. With such friends, they worry less wherever we are. They feel assured that we are doing worthwhile activities.
Aware of the social and moral problems besetting the youth today, many parents begin to worry where we might be spending a great amount of time with our peers. They fear that we might be influenced into drinking alcoholic beverages, smoking, taking prohibited drugs, engaging in premarital sex, and indulging into other vices. Some parents do not feel comfortable with the change in their children's manner of speaking, verbal expressions, and gestures as well as their strange music, which identify their peers. They feel disgusted when they see their children wear unconventional clothes and accessories.

Many Filipino youth today fall into following trends just to be considered modern. They are easily swayed by fads, which give them a sense of belonging in their groups. Peers have to do with this change of attitude of many Filipino youth.
There are those who are influenced by their peers to cheat, to act aggressively, or to neglect school works. As they go along with their peers, they begin to turn down the values taught to them by their parents.
Personally, I have friends that also engage into vices and neglect school works. Don't get me wrong, I love them. I even reprimand them at times because I care for them. How am I able to resist the pressures and influence? In order for me to overcome it, I lay my trust to the Lord God. Call me a saint, or whatever, but I believe that if the Lord is our hope and trust, we will never be influenced by anyone to do something that we don't want to do.
Choosing the right friends is very important. I am not saying that you made a wrong choice if you have friends who are into vices. It is just that it is up to you, as a servant of God to lead them to the right path. Ask them to little by little, avoid their vices. If you are a true friend, you'll be more than happy to help them change for the better. :))
